The first Go-Kart Race of the Welding students of
Thunderbolt Career & Technology Center (TCTC) took place on Tuesday, May
28, 2013 at the Technical College of the Lowcountry’s Career Skills
Center. This race was organized by Mr.
William “Billy” O’Neal, Program Coordinator, of the Technical College of the
Lowcountry (TCL) and Mr. Evon Robinson, Jr., the Welding Instructor at TCTC. They collaborated to make this event take
place for the Career and Technology Education students of TCTC.
The purpose of the Go-Kart Race was to increase the
awareness and interest in the STEM initiative, and to demonstrate to the
students that learning can be fun! TCL
wanted to introduce to the high school students the technical training and
education as an alternative to attending a four-year college or
university. This initiative was to
attract many students to the Welding program of TCTC, and also for them to
think about the programs of TCL.
In completing the Go-Kart kits, each of the 4 groups
learned how to work as a team. The
students also found out that Quality Control is of the utmost importance. This competition generated the interest and
learning of the students. The 4 groups
consisted of the following team members:
Grizzly Boys-Marquez Cannady,
Lucas Hayden, and Kenny Morris; Grim
Reeper-Kajuan Ferguson, Walter Myers, James Neuroth, and Justin Pfeffer; J4-Jonathan Fillers, Juan Hammond,
Teyvon Jones, and Joshua Nelson; and the
Dem Boyz-Lemuel Seigler, Daquan Sutter, and Christopher Turgeon.
The sponsors for this great event were: The Heritage Classic Foundation, Trish
Heichel and the Lowcountry Regional Education Center, Dream It Do It, and the
Lowcountry Workforce Development.
